James Gandolfini, the actor best known for portraying Tony Soprano in HBO’s The Sopranos, has died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 51 while vacationing in Italy.
As an avid fan of The Sopranos, I’m incredibly saddened by this news. Although Tony Soprano wasn’t his only notable role; my favorites of his include True Romance, In the Loop, Get Shorty, and the voice of Carol in Where the Wild Things Are… but it was his portrayal of the New Jersey mob boss Tony Soprano that will live on well beyond his years.
There aren’t many actors who can play a man as despicable as he was, and still have us rooting for him in the end. I’m immediately reminded of the series finale and that quick cut to black with Journey playing him out… we may never know what happened to Tony Soprano… but sadly, we know how Mr. Gandolfini’s story ends.
Rest in peace James Gandolfini.
