Two years ago, after hearing rumors of a film adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s sci-fi classic Ender’s Game, I decided to finally read the book. Now that I’ve seen the trailer, not only am I doubly happy to have read the book, I’m ecstatic to see what they’ve done with it, because frankly, it looks awesome.
I can’t say I ever imagined Harrison Ford as Graff… I always pictured Clancy Brown in the role, but from what I’m seeing, I don’t have an issue with that casting… nor do I mind that they’ve aged up the kids from six to some tweenage point. Makes much more sense, and much easier to watch when the children committing horrible acts of violence aren’t tiny tots but instead entering adolescence, and Asa Butterfield (Hugo) is a great choice to play Ender Wiggan.
There are elements to the story that I wonder how they will deal with… religious implications, pedophilia, homo-eroticism, and the general notion of xenophobia and genocide… I suppose we will have to wait to see whether or not the film will tackle these subjects or simply gloss over them in favor of making an action film more palatable to the general public.
Regardless… I’m stoked for Ender’s Game. This could be something very special (or completely ham-fisted) and I’m greatly anticipating the release in November. Enjoy the trailer…
