Coming Soon: The Last of Us (Release date TBD)

The Last of Us

I have never posted a “Coming Soon” for a video game before… but I haven’t been playing games that long, so this is the first upcoming product that has me excited for what’s to come.  My understanding is that this game was announced back in December during the Spike TV Video Game Awards, but I wasn’t paying attention to anything other than hearing that Skyrim had won “game of the year”.

The Last of Us will tell the story of Joel, a survivor of a modern plague, modeled after the cordyceps fungus that infects ants and turns them into virtual zombies, doing the bidding of the fungus itself, and Ellie, a 14 year old girl who knows nothing of the pre-apocalyptic world.  According to the developers: “The Last of Us is a genre-defining experience that blends survival and action elements to tell a character driven tale about a modern plague decimating mankind.  Nature encroaches upon civilization, forcing remaining survivors to kill for food, weapons and whatever they can find.”

The trailer for this game have fans frothing at the mouth in anticipation… yet, many people still feel burned from the Dead Island experience.  Although I very much enjoyed Dead Island, the trailer that caught everyone’s attention didn’t quite match up to the game itself.  The tone was completely different.  Naughty Dog, the people behind the Uncharted series, assures us that the tone of this game will in fact match the tone of the trailer… and if Uncharted is anything to go off of, The Last of Us should be quite an experience.

I am doubly encouraged by reading that their influences for the game include; No Country for Old Men, The Road, and the comic of The Walking Dead.  All bleak properties… all favorites of mine.

The release date has not been given yet, but the hope is either the last quarter of 2012 or the first of 2013.  I’m hoping for a late 2012 release.

There is a fungus among us,
Cornelius J. Blahg
