For reasons unbeknownst to me, this summer is littered with penis.
First, is the very real life issue of Anthony Weiner, Democratic Representative from New York, who is currently wrapped up in a sex scandal for the twenty first century. Unless you live in a cave or Utah, you have probably heard about how he was caught Tweeting a picture of his manhood to a young woman who was not his wife.
After a week or so of denials and very uncomfortable vacillating on whether or not the picture was his or not because, you know its easy to not recognize your own anatomy which I imagine you would recall taking a pic of but anyway it eventually came out that yes indeedy, that was Weiners wiener in the pics and yes, he was having multiple online affairs with women, some of whom may or may not have been of legal age. The whole thing is a bit icky to talk about and even worse when having Bill Maher and Jane Lynch reading his texts aloud on Real Time with Bill Maher… go on, watch it below. Not Safe For Work
What makes Weinergate even more frustratingly ridiculous is the political and news cycle reaction. On the left, many have called for his resignation, now even the President, if only for the fact that this has now become a national distraction. No laws (as of now) have been broken its just oogie. On the right, is hypocrisy at its finest.
Many Republicans have been calling for Weiners resignation beginning with Reince Priebus (RNC chairman) and today with John Boehner, they want him out. Not so with David Vitter of Louisiana, who is still in Congress after having multiple liaisons with prostitutes an actual crime. Not so with John Ensign, who only resigned because he knew he was going to be brought up on ethics charges but he stayed on with no calls for his resignation from the right after having an affair with a staffer, employing her husband and son, then firing all involved after getting caught, and having his parents pay their family off. Not a peep. Mark Sanford (who gets a bit of a pass for actually being in love with his mistress)? Nothing, still in office. Where is the outcry for these horn dogs to resign?
Secondly, and far less consequential is the appearance of penis in film and TV, and the stupid faux disgust coming from, what I can only imagine to be very insecure, men. After decades of T&A from women in film and TV (cable at least), a film like The Hangover Part II and Game of Thrones on HBO have the balls (pardon the pun) to show cock on the screen.
Personally, I could care less seems only fair and natural to finally show male genitalia (flaccid of course). Some men are bothered by this. I once knew a guy who claimed he only watched porn with women because if he watched porn with a man and a woman, he would see penis and that would be gay. But watching two women go at it is apparently more heterosexual. Am I missing something?
I always find it funny when we can watch a show like Game of Thrones, where seeing multiple decapitations (both human and equine), nude women in every episode, violence to the nth degree yet its the sight of male bits is cause for ewwwws. One scene in particular has two women going at it while a male character explains his grand plans, and interrupting at one point to tell one of the ladies to play with her arse. The only complaint I heard about that scene was that it was hard to follow what he was saying the women were distracting. When a Johnson comes on screen the question becomes, Really?! Was that necessary?!
I suppose we as a society still have a long way before we simply grow up and get over it. I dont like living in a world where violence is good but a nipple, or in this case a wang, will kill you. Plus, this argument is nothing new, if not completely boring and passe. Haven’t we gone over all of this before?
As for Anthony Weiner I like Keith Olbermanns suggestion resign, then run again in a special election. If his constituents dont care, why should we. Govern with the head on your shoulders play with the other. Perhaps government really is a mirror of its people we are massive hypocrites when it come to gender, genitalia and sexuality.
everybody Wang Chung tonight,
