This morning the world lost one of it’s great poets and activists… Gil Scott Heron died today.
Making a name for himself in the spoken word and jazz poetry movement in the 70’s and 80’s, Heron spoke to a disenfranchised people and helped to usher in a musical and poetic style that is still alive and kicking to this day. Without him, rap and hip hop as we know it would not exists… without him, there would be no poetry slams… there would be less justice in this world, and a voice has been silenced.
I can’t say anything about him that he couldn’t say better… rest in peace.
