Although I had seen Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 1 in the theater when it was released, and even wrote a review of it, I was surprised at how much I enjoyed watching this film again.
Mrs. Blahg and the kids had not seen it… nor had they read the books… but they have seen the previous six films… and when the credits rolled on this one, Mrs. Blahg wanted to see it again immediately. And for the record, she is not a huge fantasy fan (and is surprised again with herself for enjoying HBO’s Game of Thrones… more on that later). Why is this film so good?
I don’t have a quick answer for that… in fact, I don’t have any answer for that… but I can understand the fact that it is a great story, with a cast that we have seen grow… and amazingly, a cast that has remained totally constant (save for the death of Richard Harris) over a period of 11 years… and this film more closely follows the novel than almost any of the previous films. Sorcerer’s Stone and Chamber of Secrets also hew closely to their respective novels… but only because those are the shortest and least complicated of the tales.
Yes, this film is largely a set-up for Part 2, but it leaves on such an anticipatory note that I’m left chomping at the bit for more… and more we will get in July. So go back, read my original review of the film, and pick up the DVD. It was wonderful the first time through, and even better the second.
So whatever you do… buy it, rent it or stream it… just see this movie.
Fast forward when they dance,
Cornelius J. Blahg
