I can’t help but think of Oliver Stone’s JFK after watching this trailer. Instead, it’s Robert Redford’s take on the conspiracy to assassinate Abraham Lincoln… back and to the left, back and to the left, 1865 style.
Based on the very true story of Mary Surratt (Robin Wright) who, along with seven others, were charged in the plot to kill the President, the Vice-President and the Secretary of State… she was the only woman. Her lawyer, Mister Tumnus… errrr… I mean James McAvoy, is reluctant to defend her but begins to believe in her innocence. If you are aware of history, and Mary Surratt’s place in it, the outcome will not be a surprise, but I love a good historical drama and am always up for a different take on the subject. My only concern, because frankly, Redford is still fantastic, is whether or not the facts will be played with ala-Stone in favor of a more dramatic movie.
Lincoln seems to be quite a hot commodity right now… hopefully Spielberg will begin work on his biopic, Lincoln as well as another film in the making… Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (I don’t think that will be very accurate). Hopefully we won’t get Great Emancipatored out, because I find his life and historical ramifications fascinating to the nth degree… let’s hope The Conspirator can do all involved justice… and if judging early based on the cast (Evan Rachel Wood, Justin Long, Stephen Root, Kevin Kline and more), this looks to be great.
Four score and… wait, can I just say 87 years?
