On Saturday, November 27 2010 Irvin Kershner passed away in Los Angeles after a long illness. His career goes back to the late 1950s as a director of many TV shows, yet he will always be best remembered (and wholly beloved) as the director of 1980’s science fiction masterpiece Star Wars, Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back.
Many people believe it was George Lucas who directed Episode V, but no… this one was good (sorry… slight jab at The Lucas). Kershner famously did not get along very well with Mr. Lucas and was rumored to have said he would never work with him again. But what he left us was an absolute master work. He seemed to be a bit of a go to guy for sequels, having also directed Never Say Never Again and Robocop 2. But 30 years later, it is his work on Empire that will be best remembered.
Thank you for your work Mr. Kershner… the force will be with you… always.
